Heavy Industry

Over 24,000 acres of land is currently zoned heavy-industrial in a location that boasts proximity to transportation routes, service and supply companies, feedstocks, and existing industrial operations with the potential to capitalize on synergies. Companies such as Provident Williams, Evonik Degussa, Agrium, and Bunge all currently operate successful facilities in Sturgeon County.

Alberta's Industrial Heartland in Sturgeon County

The County’s most recent major industrial investor is a partnership between North West Upgrading Inc (NWU) and Canadian Natural Resources Limited. The planned project is a 150,000 barrel per day bitumen upgrader and refinery within Sturgeon County’s portion of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. It is expected to be operational by 2014. An exciting part of this bitumen refinery is Enhance Energy’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) system that will initially utilize CO2 from the NWU and Agrium operations, but has room to accept new and future sources of emissions. It will be the world’s largest CCS project and an incredibly important development in environmental infrastructure for the Heartland region.
