Our Key Industries

Sturgeon County is part of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland – Canada’s largest hydrocarbon and chemical processing centres with over $30 billion in existing investment. According to the 2017 issue of Major Alberta Projects, over $16.5 billion is being invested in Sturgeon County from both public and private sources. These investments enable Sturgeon County to support existing business growth and welcome new investors within the sectors of petrochemical processing, industrial manufacturing, construction, transportation and logistics, plus more! According to the 2017 issue of MoneySense’s Best Places to Live Report, Sturgeon County is the fourth best place to live in Alberta.

Advanced Energy

The development of energy resources has become essential for transportation, agriculture, information technology, and manufacturing.

According to the 2016 issue of Alberta Venture, Sturgeon County ranked in the top 10 of Alberta’s Best Communities for Business. Sturgeon County continues to attract world class companies who excel in the energy industry.

The petroleum sector will expand in 2017 when North West Redwater Partnership commissions a $8.5 billion facility which will convert the raw bitumen directly into the low carbon, ultra-low Sulphur diesel and diluents that are in short supply and high demand in Canada.

Energy deregulation in Alberta gives consumers in certain markets specific rights when it comes to their energy supply. Sturgeon County offers nine competitive retailers in our municipality including Direct Energy, EPCOR, Enmax, Fortis Alberta and more.

Value-added Agriculture

Widespread interest in fresh, locally produced cuisine combined with the rising cost of imported food has led to recent growth of the value added agriculture sector.

Sturgeon County is poised to capitalize on this opportunity given its advantageous location, strength in the agriculture industry, and aggressive rural development strategy. The strategy is aimed at diversifying the County’s agricultural sector from crops and commodities into innovative bio products, consumer ready food, and agri-tourism.
