Major Industrial Development

The County’s most recent major industrial investor is a partnership between North West Upgrading Inc (NWU) and Canadian Natural Resources Limited. North West Redwater Partnership is building the Sturgeon Refinery project, with a total capacity to refine 150,000 bpd of diesel  over three phases. This facility will produce high quality Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel fuel and diluent, through the process of hydrocracking and hydrogen addition. It is expected that commissioning for the first phase of operations will commence in 2017. The Northwest Redwater Partnership has the approvals needed for construction of phase one of the bitumen refinery in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Major site activity is underway and will ramp up over the next few years, and the facility is expected to be fully operational in 2017.
