Sturgeon County remains off COVID-19 watch list

Face coverings no longer mandatory but still encouraged to help flatten the curve

Sturgeon County has remained off the provincial COVID-19 watch list for more than 14 days.

As outlined in the Temporary Mandatory Face Coverings Bylaw this means that while face coverings are still encouraged, they are no longer mandatory in Sturgeon County’s public spaces as long as the region remains classified as “open”. Since first returning to an “open” classification on August 31, the number of active cases has fluctuated within the region but has not risen above 50 cases per an equivalent population of 100,000. As of August 15, there are 8 active COVID-19 cases in Sturgeon County.

“The numbers have been really positive and show that residents and businesses are pulling together to flatten the curve,” said Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw. “Council designed this bylaw to be a short-term measure to help protect people and to reflect what’s happening around us. If the numbers go up and the designation changes, face coverings will again be mandatory.”

As designed by Sturgeon County Council, until December 31, 2020, the Temporary Mandatory Face Coverings Bylaw will automatically be reinstated if the Sturgeon County region’s COVID-19 designation changes to “watch”.

“We want to encourage residents and visitors to continue to follow increased preventative measures like face coverings, practicing physical distancing, handwashing, and remaining at home when you are sick to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said Mayor Hnatiw. “From both a health and economic perspective, it’s vital that we keep doing everything we can to slow or prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
